Fairfax County — Permits, Crowd Managers, and Generators

Fairfax County Fire and Rescue requires a Fire Prevention Code Permit for any carnival, fair, festival, or outdoor public assembly of 500 or more people, submitted at least 30 days before the event. Once attendance passes 1,000, trained crowd managers are required at a ratio of one per 250 attendees, and they must be familiar with your evacuation plan. Generators rated 6,500 watts or higher need a separate electrical permit. If you are running mechanical carnival rides or a large tented footprint in Fairfax, build permit lead time into your planning from the start.

Prince William County — Amusement Device Permits and Inspections

Prince William County requires a permit and inspection each time an amusement device is set up, with one important exemption: small mechanical rides and inflatable amusement devices carrying an unexpired Virginia inspection certificate can operate on a verification form instead.
