Synthetic Ice Skating Rinks: How They Skate and Why They Work for Virginia Parties

Ice skating at a birthday party, a church festival or a company event sounds great until you remember that real ice needs freezing weather, power and days of setup. A synthetic ice skating rink skips all of that. Guests lace up real skates and glide on a solid, slick surface that never melts.
This guide explains what a synthetic ice skating rink is, how it feels to skate on one, and where it can go. If you already know you want one, you can check your date now.

QUICK FACTS

What Is a Synthetic Ice Skating Rink?

A synthetic ice skating rink is a flat rink made from a smooth, slick surface instead of frozen water. It is also called an artificial ice skating rink, an artificial ice rink or a fake ice skating rink, but the skating is real. Guests wear real skates, and the blades glide across the surface. There is no cold, no melting and no mess.
Most synthetic ice rinks are built from solid plastic panels that lock together like puzzle pieces. The panels are usually made from a tough, slick plastic called polyethylene.
At Jump Around VA, our rink measures 24 by 48 feet and comes with a barrier around the edge. We deliver it, set it up, staff it and take it down. You can see the details on our portable ice skating rink rental page.

How Does Synthetic Ice Feel to Skate On?

It feels like skating, with one difference: the glide is a bit slower than on frozen ice. For most families that is a plus. Beginners find it easier to stay upright, and kids spend more time skating and less time sitting on the ground.
Experienced skaters notice they push a little harder to keep their speed. They still have fun, and the rink is big enough for a few laps.

Synthetic Ice vs Real Ice: What Actually Changes

The biggest difference is what the rink needs from you. Real ice melts on a warm day and takes days to build and freeze. Synthetic ice never melts, so it can go almost anywhere with a flat surface. That is why it works for one-day events. Real ice makes more sense for a rink that stays open all season, like a city or mall rink.

Where Can a Synthetic Ice Skating Rink Go?

Almost anywhere that is flat and hard. Popular spots include parking lots, tennis courts, gyms, church halls and clubhouses. You need room for the rink plus a little space around it, about 30 by 50 feet in all. Indoors or outdoors, the rink works the same. Because the ice never melts, you can even host a summer block party on skates. We deliver from Fredericksburg to Fairfax. Check our delivery area to see if your town is covered.

What You Get With a Jump Around VA Rink

Our crew handles the whole event, not just the rink.
About 30 to 40 skaters can be on the rink at once. Timed sessions let many more guests take a turn during the same event. Rink attendants are required for every rental, and delivery is priced by your address. Both are added when you book, so you will see the full total before you pay. If the weather turns, we may be able to reschedule with proper notice, so ask about our rain policy when you book. Want to add food and seating? See our winter event packages.
