Winter Event Guide

How Much Does It Cost to Rent an Ice Rink for an Event?

Families skating on a Jump Around VA portable ice rink at an outdoor event in Virginia

From $3,499 for 4 hours, skates and staff included.

An ice rink turns an ordinary holiday party into the event people talk about until next year. But before an HOA board, church committee or office party planner can say yes, someone always asks the same question: how much does it cost?

The honest answer depends on the kind of rink, how long you need it and where your event is. This guide breaks down real prices, what moves them up or down, and sample budgets for common Virginia events. If you already know you want a rink delivered, you can see every rate on our portable ice skating rink rental page.

The Quick Answer

Synthetic rink, delivered

From $3,499 / 4 hrs

Delivered to your event by Jump Around VA, including skates and staff. A full day is $7,499.

Winter event packages

$3,223 – $6,120

The rink plus extras, depending on the package.

Arena ice time

A few hundred $ / hour

Usually a few hundred dollars per hour of ice, but your guests travel to the arena and you share the building’s schedule.

Real refrigerated rink

$21,500 – $71,200

Often this much once the rink, transport, setup, power and water are added up, and it usually needs to stay for weeks to make sense.

For a one-day party, school night or holiday festival, a synthetic rink is almost always the most affordable way to bring skating to your own location.

Synthetic ice is made of smooth, slick panels you skate on with real ice skates. It glides a little slower than frozen ice, which most families find easier for first-time skaters. Because it never melts, it can go almost anywhere with a flat surface. Learn more about how ours works on the synthetic ice rink page.

Arena rentals look cheap per hour, but you only get ice time. Guests drive to the rink, you work around public skating hours, and you lose the “it’s right here at our event” feeling.

Real ice rinks need chillers, heavy power, water, and several days to build and freeze. That is why they make sense for a town square open all season, not a Saturday party.

What Changes the Price of an Ice Rink Rental

1. How long you need it

Time is the biggest factor. Our rink starts at $3,499 for up to 4 hours. Each extra hour adds $200, so 5 hours is $3,699 and 6 hours is $3,899. If your event runs all day, the full-day rate of $7,499 is usually the better deal.

2. The size of the rink

Our standard rink is 24 × 48 feet and fits about 30 to 40 skaters at once. That size works for most parties and community events. Custom sizes are available for larger crowds and are priced by quote.

3. Delivery distance

Delivery is priced by your address and shows at checkout. Events close to our home base in Locust Grove, or in towns we serve often like Fredericksburg and Stafford, keep that cost low. You can check whether your town is on our service area list.

4. Your site

The rink needs a flat surface about 24 × 48 feet, plus a little room around the edges. Parking lots, tennis courts, gyms and fellowship halls are all good choices. Steep slopes, gravel, or a setup area far from where the truck can park can add labor time, so tell us about the space when you ask for a price.

5. Add-ons and packages

Many hosts pair the rink with a bounce house, snacks or a cozy warm-up area. Booking those separately adds up quickly. Our winter event packages bundle the rink with other rentals and are often cheaper than building the same event item by item.

6. Your date

December weekends book first. The price doesn't jump, but your choice of dates shrinks fast. Weekday and early-December dates give you the most flexibility.

What It Costs Per Skater

A $3,499 rental can sound like a lot until you divide it by the number of people who skate.

About $11 per skater

4 hours · about 300 skating turns · $3,499

With 30 to 40 skaters on the ice at once and 20-minute sessions, a 4-hour event fits about nine sessions once you allow time for skate changes. That is around 300 skating turns, or roughly $11 to $12 per skater. Stretch the event to 6 hours and you get about 450 turns for $3,899, closer to $8 to $9 each.

Many churches, schools and HOAs cover part of the cost by selling skate wristbands or adding a concession machine for hot chocolate and popcorn.

Costs People Forget to Budget For

  • Delivery. Shown at checkout once you enter your address.
  • Permits. Public parks and some towns require a permit for events. Check with your county early.
  • Insurance paperwork. Many HOAs, schools and churches ask the rental company for a certificate of insurance. Ask for it when you book.
  • Lighting. In December the sun sets before 5 p.m. If skating runs into the evening, plan for good lighting. Pattern gobo lights can project snowflakes or your logo onto the ground for extra atmosphere.
  • Staff for everything else. Our attendants run the rink. For bigger events with several rentals, an on-site event manager frees your volunteers.
  • A weather plan. The rink itself handles cold and damp weather, but your guests may not. A backup indoor space or a tent keeps the event on.

Evening skating needs good lighting. String lights or gobo projections keep the rink bright after sunset.

How to Keep Your Ice Rink Cost Down

  • Pick the right length. Most parties feel full at 4 hours. Pay for longer only if guests will keep arriving.
  • Choose a package. If you want more than just the rink, a winter package usually costs less than separate rentals.
  • Book early. Early bookings get first choice of December dates, so you are not forced into a longer or less convenient slot.
  • Use an easy site. A flat parking lot or gym close to where the truck parks keeps setup simple.
  • Share the cost. Wristband sales, sponsors or a small ticket price can cover a large part of the rental for community events.
