ICE SKATING RINK RENTALS · VIRGINIA
Synthetic vs. Real Ice: Which Portable Rink Is Right for Your Event?
So you want ice skating at your event. Great idea. Few things get kids, parents and even the “I’ll just watch” crowd excited like a rink showing up in the parking lot.
Then you hit the big question: should you go with synthetic ice or real ice?
They sound like they’d be close to the same thing. They’re not. Each one skates differently, costs very differently, and needs very different things from your venue. Pick the wrong one and you could end up paying for a rink that’s overkill, or one that doesn’t fit your space at all.
Here’s a plain-English breakdown so you can make the call with confidence. And if you already know you want a rink in Virginia, you can see sizes and rates on our portable ice skating rink rental page.
The Short Answer
MOST EVENTS
Pick synthetic ice if…
Your event lasts a day or a weekend, you want it set up the same day, or you’re working with a parking lot, gym or hall. This is what most parties, schools, churches, HOAs and company events choose.
SEASON-LONG RINKS
Pick real ice if…
You’re running a rink for weeks or a whole season, like a town square or shopping center rink, and you have the budget, power and water to support it.
That’s the quick version. Now let’s look at why.
What Is Synthetic Ice, Anyway?
Synthetic ice is a surface made of smooth, slick plastic panels that lock together into one rink. You skate on it with regular ice skates with metal blades. No freezing, no water, no chillers.
It’s not a toy version of skating. You glide, turn and stop the same way you would on frozen ice. The panels are made to be slippery, and many rinks add a glide treatment to make them even smoother. (Want the deeper dive? Read our guide to synthetic ice skating rinks in Virginia.)
What Is a Real Portable Ice Rink?
A real portable rink is actual frozen water. Crews lay down a liner and a network of cooling pipes, connect them to a large refrigeration unit (a chiller), fill the rink with water, and freeze it layer by layer.
It’s the classic ice rink experience. But it takes heavy equipment, a lot of electricity, a steady water supply and several days before anyone can skate.
How They Feel to Skate On
This is the part most people wonder about first.
REAL ICE
Faster and smoother
Experienced skaters will notice the extra glide right away. If you’re hosting hockey players or figure skaters who want to practice real moves, real ice is the better match.
SYNTHETIC ICE
A little more grip
You glide a bit slower and push a bit harder. For a party crowd, that’s often a good thing. Little kids and first-timers feel steadier, and the slower pace keeps a full rink of beginners calmer.
The honest truth? Most guests at a birthday party or holiday festival don’t care about the difference. They care about getting on skates, holding hands with a friend and taking a few laps. Synthetic ice delivers that.
Side-by-Side Comparison
| Synthetic ice | Real ice | |
|---|---|---|
| How it skates | A bit slower, more grip, beginner friendly | Fast, smooth, classic glide |
| Setup time | A few hours, same day | Several days to build and freeze |
| Power and water | None needed | A lot of both |
| Weather | Doesn’t melt, works in warm or cold weather | Sun, rain and warm days can soften or damage the ice |
| Where it works | Parking lots, gyms, halls, courts | Large, level sites with heavy utility access |
| Upkeep during the event | Quick sweep | Resurfacing and constant temperature control |
| Typical cost | Usually a few thousand dollars for an event | Often tens of thousands for a multi-week setup |
| Best for | One-day and weekend events | Season-long public rinks |
Cost: The Biggest Difference
For one-day events, it isn’t even close.
SYNTHETIC · JUMP AROUND VA
From $3,499 for up to 4 hours
Includes skates, staff, setup and takedown. Most delivered synthetic rinks land at a few thousand dollars.
REAL REFRIGERATED RINK
Often $21,500 – $71,200
Once you add the chiller, transport, setup, power, water and the days it takes to freeze. That only pays off when the rink stays open for weeks and sells a lot of tickets.
Setup and Space
Synthetic ice shows up on a truck, and the crew builds it the same day. All it needs is a flat surface, plus a little room around the edges. Our standard rink is 24 × 48 feet and fits about 30 to 40 skaters at once. It works indoors or outside: a church fellowship hall, a school gym, an HOA tennis court or a business parking lot.
Real ice needs a lot more. The ground has to be very level, the chiller has to sit nearby, and the site needs heavy-duty power and a water hookup. Then you wait for it to freeze. If your venue is booked for one Saturday, real ice usually isn’t realistic.
Weather: Virginia Doesn't Always Cooperate
December in Virginia can swing from freezing one day to 60 degrees the next. That matters a lot for real ice.
Warm temperatures, direct sun and rain all wear down a real rink. Crews have to work hard to keep the surface skateable, and some days it may not be safe to use at all.
Synthetic ice doesn’t care. It won’t melt on a mild afternoon, and it skates the same in November as it does in July. That’s why synthetic rinks also work for events most people wouldn’t expect, like a summer “winter wonderland” party or an indoor spring carnival.
Upkeep During Your Event
Real ice needs regular resurfacing to stay smooth, along with someone watching the temperature and the chiller the whole time.
Synthetic ice is much easier. A quick sweep between sessions keeps it clean. Our attendants handle that, along with helping new skaters and keeping the rink running smoothly, so your volunteers can actually enjoy the party.
Which One Fits Your Event?
Here’s how it usually shakes out:
✓ SYNTHETIC
Birthday parties
It fits a driveway, backyard or rented hall, and kids pick it up quickly.
✓ SYNTHETIC
HOA and neighborhood holiday events
A clubhouse parking lot or tennis court is plenty of space.
✓ SYNTHETIC
Church Christmas festivals
It can go inside the fellowship hall or out in the lot, rain or shine. Pair it with Christmas rentals for a full winter scene.
✓ SYNTHETIC
School winter carnivals
Run timed sessions by grade and the whole school gets a turn.
✓ SYNTHETIC
Company holiday parties and team events
Set up in a few hours, gone by the end of the night.
✓ REAL ICE
Town square or mall rink open all season
If it’s running for six or eight weeks and selling tickets daily, the bigger investment can pay off.
If you want the rink plus a few extras, our winter event packages bundle everything together and often cost less than booking each piece on its own.
Common Questions
Yes. You wear regular ice skates with metal blades. Jump Around VA brings about 40 to 50 pairs in kid and adult sizes, so guests don’t need their own.
Yes. The slightly slower glide actually helps beginners feel more in control. Our rink also has a safety barrier around the edge, and trained attendants stay on site the whole time.
Definitely. It’s slick enough to glide, spin and race your friends. It just takes a little more push than frozen ice.
No. That’s one of its biggest advantages. No outlets, no hoses, no chillers.
Yes. Since synthetic ice never melts, you can skate any time of year.
The Bottom Line
Real ice is the right call for a rink that’s open all season and has the budget and utilities to back it up. For almost every other event, synthetic ice gives you real skating, same-day setup and no weather stress, at a fraction of the cost.
